1. Arden Children’s Theatre is top-notch. They’ve been doing shows for kids for 16 years and put the same resources into their Children’s Series Shows – professional actors, designers, sets, etc. – that they do for their Mainstage shows. And this one’s a musical…added bonus!

2. The Stinky Cheese Man takes classic stories that all children know and mixes them up in wacky ways. Your kids will get that the stories are all parodies of the original (even though the main character doesn’t,) and they’ll love being in on the joke.


3.Your kids won’t know that they are learning…but they are! Live theatre enhances literary knowledge (this one is based on a book) and increases tolerance and empathy. What parent doesn’t want that?

4.Post show Q&A and meet & greets with the cast give kids the chance to ask questions like, “Was that really supposed to happen?”, “Is your tail real?” and “How much do you make?”

Looking to have some fall family fun?  Head to Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Lancaster PA.  Last weekend my family and I visited the family friendly farm that has something for everyone.

Cherry Crest Adventure Farm is a 15-acre farm, with 50+ Farm Fun activities, including the Hay Chute Slide and Straw Bale Racer, Jump Pillow, Farm Tour Wagon Ride, Petting Zoo and Farm Experience Center, Corny’s Ball-cade, and everyone's favorite the Corn Maze.


They have thought of everything to keep everyone having fun!  Forgot your stroller or the kids tired of walking rent a wagon for the day.  Kids hungry their are plenty of options for the family to get something to eat or drink.



Cherry Crest has been open for 20 years and this year the corn maze is a locomotive just like it was 20 years age.  I loved the fact the there were 3 options when going through the maze,  Easy, intermediate and advanced.   The advance takes the longest to complete 3.5 to 4 hours and the easy takes under 30 minutes.   There are different stations that you can visit while going through the maze where you can get clues on how to get out of the maze.   If you get hungry to need to use the bathroom while in the maze no worries they have food and bathrooms in the maze.



After the maze you can enjoy the many activities around the farm the will certainly tire your family out after a day at the farm.  Looking for more adventure?  Hop on the Strasburg Railroad you can by tickets inside the farm and catch the train.




On October 31st Cherry Crest Adventure Farm will hold Pumpkin Madness Fest

The Pumpkin Madness Fest begins at 12 noon with Corny’s Costume Parade – for kids who come in family-friendly costumes (no masks permitted). Cherry Crest’s mascot Corny will be joined by the Pumpkin Princess for the parade and to greet guests throughout the day.


Pumpkin Madness proves you can get very creative when it comes to smashing pumpkins. Activities include:

• Reverse Pumpkin Darts – where you will hurl pumpkins at a board filled with pointy darts!
• Pumpkin Shotput Contest – carefully monitored, where competitors with the farthest throws in their category win a Cherry Crest Adventure Farm season pass!
• Pumpkin Ring Toss - based on the classic carnival game with various levels for different ages.
• Notes from the Sky Pumpkin Drop – where your pumpkin is hurled from the top of a giant boom lift and crashes onto the target below. The bigger the pumpkin the better the splat! People really have fun with this as they can write messages on their pumpkins which are read over the microphone before they’re dropped!
• Pumpkin Smashing – with a big rubber mallet – very therapeutic for all ages!
• Pumpkin Bowling – for kids age 10 and under.
• Pin-the-Face-on-the-Pumpkin – a play on Pin the Tail that’s perfect for small children.
• Flyby Pumpkin Pie Drop – at 3:45 p.m.,where you can watch parachuted pies fall from the sky, just for fun!
• Flyby Candy Drop – at 4 p.m., where kids age 12 & under can grab all they can as a plane drops the goods from 200 feet.

• at 3 p.m. see a 800+ pound pumpkin fall from the giant crane.
• at 5 p.m. the Grand Finale Giant Pumpkin Drop starring the largest pumpkin we can find. The largest to date – at 1,744.5 pounds – is the record to beat this year!

Last weekend I visited Adventure Aquarium to check out their newest exhibit Turtles: Journey of Survival. This limited-engagement exhibit showcases an array of land and aquatic turtle and tortoise species from all over the world - over 20 different turtles - including two recently rescued Loggerhead Sea turtles. The exhibit includes the largest and most diverse collection of turtles ever assembled at Adventure Aquarium and will feature special character appearances, live shows and programming designed to shed light on local conservation efforts and practical ways to help protect turtles in the wild.

This exhibit is a great way for kids to learn about turtles up close and understand their habitat.  I never realized that there were so many different species of turtles.  My kids loved comparing the turtles in size, color and texture.




We got to meet 'Ozzy"a yearling (toddler) who was deemed “non-releasable” by US Fish & Wildlife officials. Ozzy will remain a permanent member of Adventure Aquarium’s collection, serving as an ambassador for Loggerhead Sea turtles worldwide. 



One of my favorite parts of the exhibit was the Terrapin Tide Pool, you can't touch the turtles but it's a great way to get up-close and see the turtles.  We fell in love with two turtles following one another around the pool.

This past weekend my family and I traveled to Hershey Park to check out Hershey's Christmas Candylane.  Christmas Candylane opens each year in November and runs until December 31st.  You will definitely be in the holiday spirit after spending a day at Hershey.


Hershey's Christmas Candylane features many attractions for guests of all ages including over 30 rides. The park comes alive with holiday cheer including lights and festive decorations. The shops in the park sell holiday items, to get some special gifts for those hard to shop for people on your list. Sing-along at the heart-warming Christmas show, A Rockin' Music Box Christmas, or take a break from the rides for the Christmas Candylane Storytime.

Cinderella & Prince Sebastian

I recently had the chance to see Cinderella at the Arden Theater.  This is not your Disney Cinderella, but I love the twist that the Arden put on this show. It's still the basic Cinderella story about a young girl who loses her mother, her father remarries and Cinderella has new sisters.  The fairy godmother is a bird who helps to guide Cinderella throughout this difficult time in her life.  Cinderella becomes friends with a young boy that she doesn't know is really the prince.  One of my favorite characters was the Prince's friend Wolfgang, as in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  The King also stole the show with his crazy ideas that made every kid in the audience crack up.

One of my favorite parts of the show was how they used shadows and light to tell the story.  .  This show is for the whole family, when boys hear Cinderella they think it's the typical story, but the show has many positive male role models that boys can relate to.  As usual the Arden theater puts on another amazing performance this holiday season!

The Discovery Channel’s Shark Week may be over, but there’s certainly no shortage of shark-infested fun at Adventure Aquarium! Last week I had the chance to visit one of the newest exhibits at Adventure Aquarium, Megalodon.    Megalodon has taken over Adventure Aquarium this summer.  Even though I am deathly afraid of sharks, I was interested in learning more about this shark.


About Megalodon

The largest shark that ever lived has taken over Adventure Aquarium this summer - now through September 3. Witness a 5,000-square-foot exhibit highlighting the evolution, biology and misconceptions of Megalodon, an enormous prehistoric shark that once cruised all the world's oceans. Related to the modern great white and mako sharks, Megalodon was a dominant marine predator for 15 million years before vanishing 2 million years ago.


What to check out







Don't miss walking through the 60 foot-long metal sculpture replica of an adult Megalodon.  You will be amazed at the size of the shark.





Great, hands-on activities for the kids are available to learn more about sharks. Touch a full set of 47 Megalodon teeth and view real specimens showing tooth differences between upper and lower jaws, male and female sharks, and sharks' unique system of tooth replacement.

We learned so much about Megalodon, the kids loved the hands on activities.  I loved that my kids were excited about learning facts about Megalodon.  This is a must see event at the Adventure Aquarium and it will be leaving soon so make sure you see it before September 3rd.

GO!” (momentum), and “Machine Mechanics” (simple machines).


A special program for preschoolers only, “Incline Design,” in the DCM’s early-childhood Training Wheels gallery will provide the youngest guests the a chance to play with the effects of different ramp angles and lengths on speed and momentum.

Last week, I was invited to Ikea, Conshohocken to check out their new 2012 catalog.  I am a huge fan of Ikea's products and it truly is a family friendly place to take the kids while you shop. Now, you may be wondering how Ikea can be a fun thing to do with kids.  :

Starting Friday, July 22, Adventure Aquarium will introduce a brand new concept:“Summer Fun Nights,” extended hours in the summer months to provide guests with 3 extra hours of fun at America’s Most Touchable Aquarium. On weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights) from July 22 through Aug 14, Adventure Aquarium is extending its operating hours from 5 pm to 8 pm (Aquarium opens at 9:30 AM), so that guests can take full advantage of the added daylight that summer brings.


“Summer Fun Nights were created in response to guest feedback expressing a desire to visit Adventure Aquarium in the evening, particularly in the summer months,” said Kevin Keppel, the Aquarium’s Executive Director. “These extended summer hours are just another way we’re able to make a trip to Adventure Aquarium convenient and accessible for guests.”

If your a kid at heart you need to check out the Choo Choo Barn –Traintown, U.S.A.® - located in Strasburg, PA. This is one of the largest,most engaging, custom model train displays in America.  Featuring more than 150 animations and 22 operating trains, this 1,700 square foot, handcrafted, work-of- art is packed with action as it details the many familiar landmarks and scenes Lancaster County.

Be transported back into the early history of American culture with the Strasburg Rail Road, America’s oldest short line railroad and a designated heritage site. Founded during the first term of President Andrew Jackson, Strasburg Rail Road can trace it's roots back to 1837 when it began hauling freight, most likely by horse-drawn cars. Locomotives began to rumble down the tracks and through the Amish farms and countryside in the 1850s. In 1958 the railroad was purchased by railroad buffs and set toward a goal of preserving this piece of railroad history.

Recently my family and I visited The Amish Village in Ronks, PA.  I remember visiting the Amish Village when I was young and I was excited to share this experience with my kids.  The Amish Village is an authentic living museum showcasing Lancaster County’s Amish community, the oldest and largest in the nation. The 12-acre Amish farm and homestead, located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, gives visitors a unique look into history and into this beautiful and peaceful culture.

Our tour started in the 1840's Amish farm house, our tour guide walked us through the rooms of the house and explained may of the Amish customs and the reasoning behind them.  I was fascinated with how they use some of our modern day appliances without electric by converting them over to propane. My kids enjoyed learning about the clothes the Amish women wear. They loved the simplicity of the Amish wedding dress.

This guided tour lasted about 25-minutes and we learned about the history of the Amish, their religion, family life and cultural traditions and why they choose not to use some modern conveniences.

Barn
Next we had the opportunity to visit the barn to see many of the animals that would normally be on an Amish farm. They have a baby bull named Fernando that my kids had the chance to feed.  They also got to see pigs, a horse and even a peacock.

One-room Schoolhouse
We were also able to experience a special treat only offered during the summer months. We got to meet an authentic Amish school teacher who explained what life in a one-room school house is like. During your lesson you find out what makes the Amish education different and why schooling ends at 8th grade. The authentic Amish teacher will be at The Amish Village on Saturdays from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, June through August.  My family and I enjoyed talking to her and asking how the school day is different from the school day of my children.

DETAILS: Broad stripes and bright stars will be on full display on Tuesday, June 14 at the National Constitution Center. In honor of Flag Day, visitors to the Center will learn how to properly display and care for the U.S. flag during special flag etiquette workshops. An interactive and entertaining spectacle, “The Star Spangled Banner Show” will teach visitors about the flag that flew over the Battle of Fort McHenry and moved Francis Scott Key to pen our America’s National Anthem.



A flag folding ceremony of giant proportions will occur at 1:00 p.m. Visitors will watch as staff members of the Center fold a giant 20' X 38' flag in the Grand Hall lobby.



Children also will have the opportunity to proudly display their own versions of red, white and blue with craft projects including crepe paper flags and stars and stripe wands and pinwheels.

Last week Fun Things was given the chance to visit the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia. We were invited to check out their newest exhibit Rainforest Rhythms. Each time I visit the Please Touch Museum I fall in love with it some more. I love that the museum encourages young children to use their imaginations and learn through play. Check out our video below to see the fun we had.




Rainforest Rhythms
This fun interactive exhibit opened at the museum on May 28th and will be there until September 6th. Children will experience the rainforest by beating conga drums, turning rain stick logs, listening to tropical rapids, and interacting with jungle animals.

PTM’s youngest visitors will be able to play in Rhythm’s “Storybook Cottage,” a comfortable area that is toddler friendly. Next to the cottage, children can play the forest marimba with a pair of mallets, or pretend to paddle down a river in a dugout canoe.

The Family Lounge

Families have fun with your toddlers in the Family Lounge. Children can create crafty projects, play with new toys, put on a puppet show, or watch their favorite movies. Pick up a Kid's Passport to learn new things and find great surprises throughout the Flower Show gardens.

Girl Scout Day at Philadelphia International Flower Show on Sunday, March 13th

The program will be held Sunday, March 13, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., in Room 107AB in the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Girl Scouts who come in uniform will be admitted to the Flower Show on that day at half-price.There is no admission charge for anyone who wants to attend the Girl Scout Day event in Room 107 only.
