Theater/ Holiday Shows in the Philadelphia Area

Carve out some family time this holiday season by catching some great shows that are happening in the Philadelphia area this holiday season.

Fri, December 13 - Sun, December 29

Into the Woods, a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, is one of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's most popular shows.
An ambivalent Cinderella, a bloodthirsty Little Red Riding Hood and Prince Charming with a roving eye are among the cockeyed characters in this fractured fairy tale. This award winning musical is equally enjoyable for children and adults.

November 29th - December 24th

This year marks our 28th annual presentation of the classic Dickens tale about the transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge from miser to man who honors Christmas in his heart, as adapted by internationally known playwright Nagle Jackson. Come find out why this has become a Delaware Valley holiday tradition.

Jack Frost at the Media Theater
Sundays at Noon from Nov. 24 through Dec. 29

The rollicking, merry, and heartfelt musical is all about a boy who is unique because everything he touches turns to ice. Jack Frost appears out of a snow bank and meets four humorous animals: a rabbit, a polar bear, a penguin, and a raccoon. He then escapes from the North Pole and finds himself in a ‘mistaken identity’ situation.

December 27th - January 5th

Exciting twists and turns await as Mickey, Minnie -- and you -- embark on a wild ride to your favorite Disney destinations.  See the world from the rooftops of London, travel to the sun-soaked Motunui, set off on a safari to the Pride Lands and play at a larger-than-life carnival with Woody and Forky.  Join us for a fun-filled getaway jam-packed with unexpected hijinks and up-close character interactions — right in your hometown!

November 30 – December 22

On one remarkable Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who show him past, present—and possible future. You and your favorite kids are in for a treat with a special hour-long musical adaptation for kids that uses traditional songs to highlight Dickens’ magical story. Deck the halls as our holiday spirits travel beyond the footlights, right into your very own heart.

November 13 - January 5

Fairytales collide in our brand new holiday panto — Robin Hood is dead, his merry men are in hiding, and Nottinghamshire is taken over by a greedy villainess. (Gasp!) Can a new hero, or heroine, emerge from Sherwood Forest and save the day? Set in the 1940s with a dash of the medieval, this hilarious, musical mashup is our most inventive panto yet.

A Review of Arden Children's Theatre Presents Peter Pan

Are you looking for an adventure this holiday season? Maybe one that will take you to “where dreams are born, and time is never planned.  Just think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wings, forever, in Neverland.”  I know just the place that will take you to Neverland. Arden Theatre Company celebrates the 20th Anniversary Season of Arden Children’s Theatre with Peter Pan.

My family and I had the chance to see this amazing show.  If you have been to the Arden Theatre for a show before you know that they always add a different perspective to the original story.  With Peter Pan, the story is the same but it's brought to life in a new way.

The story starts out with Wendy as a mother raising her daughter Jane.  Some of my favorite characters from Peter Pan are also grown up.  Michael, Wendy's brother is there and so is Charlotte, Wendy, and Michael's mother.  Wendy's daughter asks for the family to tell her a bedtime story about Peter Pan.  The family recounts their past adventures with Peter Pan.  As Jane falls asleep the audience is taken back in time to when Wendy first met Peter Pan and how she and Micheal flew to Neverland with Peter.  Don't fret Captain Hook, Smee, the Lost Boys and even Tiger Lily are all part of the story.

I always love how creative the Arden Theatre is about how they tell a story.  It's always outside of the box, which I feel helps the children in the audience to encourage them to use their imaginations.  My two favorite creative effects in the story were the lights they used for Tinker Bell and the camper becoming the crocodile.

I grew up reading and watching the movie Peter Pan as a child but seeing it as an adult/mother, the story took on a whole new meaning.  As a child, I thought that going to a magical place with no responsibilities or parents meant a world of fun and adventure.  As a mom, I realized that when Wendy allowed Jane to go to Neverland with Peter Pan she was letting go as a mother and allowing Jane to grow up and spread her wings.

Don't miss the chance to see an amazing show with your family this holiday season.  Peter Pan is now playing through January 28th.

Ever since J.M. Barrie's story first appeared in 1904, countless versions have been produced on stage and in the film. Join Peter on his adventure to Neverland, a magical island where there are no parents, no chores, and fairies and pirates rule!
