Victorine's Valentine's Day at Hagley Museum

Victorine's Valentine's Day

Saturday, February 8, 2014

12:30 to 4 p.m.

Victorine’s Valentine’s Day is a sweet family event with something for everyone. Guests can decorate a candy bar wrapper and customize a cup of hot chocolate with different toppings.

Stop by the Gibbons House, where you can nibble a delicious gingerbread heart baked in the wood stove.

Visitors can also discover the Victorian roots of Valentine’s Day with a display of antique Valentine cards and chocolate-themed treasures from Hagley’s collections; learn about floriography (the secret language of flowers); and create a bouquet of tissue paper flowers to send a sweet message to a loved one.

Victorine’s Valentine’s Day is named in honor of Victorine du Pont Bauduy who tragically lost the love of her life only six weeks after their wedding. Fortunately she found another love: teaching. Learn about her story by reading her love poems and writing your own with a quill pen.

As you celebrate this Valentine’s season with us, we invite you to make a Valentine for someone you have never met and who may be alone on Valentine’s Day. We’ll be sending your handmade Valentine cards to residents in local nursing homes to be sure they know that they, too, are remembered.

All activities will be held in the Powder Yards and on Workers’ Hill.
